Letter from Exergy's CEO
In 1991, recycling was still a novel idea, and conversations about green or clean energy hadn’t even begun. As the founding president of my high school’s Students for Environmental Awareness, I believed deeply in the promise of preserving the planet through what seemed like simple, straightforward solutions. But now, as the CEO of Exergy, I’ve come to realize how incomplete—and often one-sided—the narrative around energy truly is.
My journey of discovery was cemented during the Outlaw Diesel Super Series (ODSS) Diesel Motorsports Awards Ceremony at PRI 2024, where I encountered a vibrant, tight-knit community of racers, teams, and businesses. These aren’t just competitors—they’re innovators, problem-solvers, and stewards of progress. Diesel racing isn’t just about speed; it’s about pushing technology to its limits, proving what diesel can achieve under the toughest conditions, and driving advancements that benefit industries far beyond the track.
Yet while diesel continues to evolve and achieve remarkable progress—reducing emissions, increasing efficiency, and even exploring renewable options like biodiesel—it’s often overshadowed by the relentless push for electric vehicles. We’re told EVs are the answer, but the reality isn’t that simple. Mining for battery materials devastates landscapes, energy for production often comes from nonrenewable sources, and recycling challenges loom large. I'm finding it’s not so much a “green” revolution as it is a "greed" revolution—one driven as much by profit as by environmental promises.
I don’t like being sold a one-sided story. And I believe many of you don’t either. We deserve a balanced conversation that acknowledges all the facts and celebrates the incredible progress of technologies like diesel.
Diesel is not the villain it’s made out to be. It powers the trucks that deliver goods, the farms that feed the world, and the infrastructure that keeps our economy moving. Diesel racing is where this progress is tested and proven—a showcase for the ingenuity, resilience, and determination that define this industry.
When we began this mission, our goal was simple: to bring a fun, family-friendly event to the West Michigan community. But it has become clear that this is about so much more. It’s a fight for an industry and, ultimately, a fight for the truth.
